Updated: How to get your MCG/MCG PRO to work with your Gunfighter Mk.I (Jan 18, 2018)

Hi guys,

You might find some useful information in this Howto about how to update firmware, reset your device to default, and how to calibrate your Gunfighter.

  • If you own a new Gunfighter Mk.II with MCG/MCG PRO or KG12, its firmware was factory loaded, and everything works out of the box. If you want to update to a new firmware, read on.
  • If you’re using a Gunfighter Mk.I with the VKB KG12 default grip, its firmware was factory loaded, and everything worked out of the box. If you want to update to a new firmware, or change your grip to the MCG/MCG PRO, read on.
  • If you – at one point in time – started using your TM Warthog grip via adapter, you had to flash the Gunfighter’s BlackBox firmware to allow the TM Warthog grip to be recognized. If you want to update to a new firmware, or use a different grip, read on.

Here are some pointers you might find useful:

  • First, removing one grip (either the default KG12 or the TM Warthog) from the Gunfighter Mk.I,  and sticking your new MCG or MCG PRO onto it does not mean the VKB BlackBox will magically understand the previous grip has been replaced.
    • Your Black Box is set to work with either the default MCG (Gunfighter Mk.II), KG12 (Gunfighter Mk. I or Mk.II), or the TM Warthog (you installed with an adapter) grip via firmware.
    • When you replace your current grip with your new MCG or MCG PRO, the BlackBox sees this new grip as a malfunctioning KG12 (or TM Warthog) grip, hence the flashing red light on the BlackBox.
  • To enable the Gunfighter’s BlackBox to recognize your new MCG or MCG PRO, there is a dedicated firmware which you have to install first.
  • Once the firmware is installed, you need to reset your Gunfighter’s BlackBox configuration to “DEFAULT”, so your new MCG/MCG PRO grip can start communicating with the Gunfighter Mk.I’s base.
  • Calibrating your Gunfighter + MCG/MCG PRO is the final step.

With these conceptual items out of the way, here are a couple of step-by-step procedures to continue:

  • First, download the VKBdevCfg-C app – click here (updated Jan 12, 2018). Extract the zip file.
  • Next, download the ZBootloader-C app – click here. Extract the zip file into the same folder where your VKBdevCfg app already is.
  • Now, download the BlackBox firmware for Gunfighter + MCG/MCG PRO/KG12 – click here (updated Jan 18, 2018). Extract the firmware (*.vkb) from either the KG12, MCG or MCG PRO folder respectively, and put it into the same folder where your VKBdevCfg app already is.

Important Note: It is highly recommended to right-click on the VKBdevCfg app and select ‘Run as Administrator.

Important Note: If ZBootloader-C says “Device is not ready”, please check whether VKBdevCfg is not shut down. Additionally, you might see this error message when some 3rd party software (e.g., Logitech or Razor or whatever else) has grabbed the joystick and established control over it. Ensure that all 3rd party software of this kind is temporarily disabled while you’re updating the firmware.

Flash your BlackBox firmware to enable the MCG or MCG PRO to be recognized:

  1. Launch VKBdevCfg-C.
  2. In the top panel, click on the “VKBsim Gunfighter Modern Combat” name to select it.
  3. From the Tools tab, click on the “Bootloader” icon; this should close VKBdevCFG and automatically start ZBootloader-C (if you have it in the same folder).
  4. Point ZBootloader-C to the extracted *.vkb file and update the firmware of your BlackBox by clicking “Flash It”.
  5. The device will restart with the new firmware installed.

Important Note: If in Step 3. above you get a “Read Error 0” message and it won’t allow you to continue, apply the following workaround:

  1. From within the Zbootloader, click “Reset”
  2. Exit Zbootloader
  3. Go back into VKBdevCfg
  4. Exit VKBdevCfg right away
  5. Click on the ZBootloader-C executable and continue with Step 4. above.

Set your BlackBox to factory default:

  1. Launch VKBdevCfg-C.
  2. In the top panel, click on the “VKBsim Gunfighter Modern Combat” name to select it.
    • (Steps 3 and 4 below are no longer needed with VKBdevCfg ver. 0_83_9_6 as of Jan 12, 2018)
  3. Click on the “Info” tab and type DEFAULT (all uppercase!)
  4. Click on the unlabeled button on the bottom-right within the “Info” window
  5. From the Tools tab, click on the new “Default” button in the top-left corner of the app.
  6. The device will restart with factory default settings; any previously red blinking ‘Stick LED’ on the BlackBox should turn solid green.

Calibrate your Gunfighter /w MCG or MCG PRO:

Note: Don’t use the native Windows calibration utility! Use VKBDevCfg as you have up to this point already.

  1. Flip the foldable trigger to the “up” position (MCG PRO only).
  2. Squeeze the trigger fully, and let go of it to return it to the middle position (MCG PRO only).
  3. Launch VKBdevCfg-C.
  4. In the top panel, click on the “VKBsim Gunfighter Modern Combat” name to select it.
  5. Fom the Tools tab, click the ‘Start Calibr’ button in VKBdevCfg; the SYS LED on the Blackbox starts blinking.
  6. Move the stick through its full range (pitch and roll axes).
  7. Move the MASTER MODE (РЕЖИМ КБО) ministick on the MCG’s head through its full range.
  8. Move the GATE CONT (УПРАВ СТРОБ) ministick on the MCG’s head through its full range.
  9. Squeeze the BRAKE lever fully and let go of it.
  10. Move the foldable trigger to the “up” position, squeeze it, and then let go of it – this moves it through its full range (MCG PRO only).
  11. If you have VKB T-Rudders are connected to the Gunfighter’s BlackBox – move the T-Rudder axis through its full range as well.
  12. Click the ‘End Calibr’ button; the joystick will restart (VKBdevCfg may be closed manually if desired).
  13. Done; Calibration information is stored within the Gunfighter’s BlackBox.

All done – ready to fly!

Until next time,
